Rediscovering Play

Last May, my husband and I made the difficult decision to put our beloved cockapoo Rocky down after nearly 16 years. We took some time to mourn him but our home just did not feel the same without a furry creature in it. So two weeks ago, after a long wait, we adopted a mini golden doodle, Marley.

Marley is a sweetheart. Affectionate and very much attached to us but also stubborn and feisty. Through her, I’m rediscovering PLAY—whether it’s throwing a ball (she’s retrieving already!), playing hide and go seek with her tiny stuffed animals, or indulging her in tug of war.

I remember playing with Rocky and with my daughters when they were little (20 years ago!) but it’s been a long time. Why is play so often reserved for the realm of children and animals? How can play become a part of our daily lives, as adults, even when small creatures are not underfoot?

As I always say, the first step is awareness. So I’m leaning into the pleasure of play and paying attention to other ways I can create more playful opportunities in my life.

My husband Peter likes to fix things—he jokes that he's a rare breed of "handy Jew." His dream is to rebuild a vintage car someday. So when something goes awry in our house, he's quick to jump in with his toolbox, whereas I'd usually pick up the phone and call the...
